THE MARTIAL ARTIST

W. Dan Hausel took up martial arts in 1964 for self-defense due to the hostile environment where he grew up. He and three others grew their hair to perform as a rock n' roll band, and the ultraconservative environment in Utah resulted in potential conflicts.  He later discovered there was much more to the martial arts than just self-defense - he discovered traditions,  philosophy, techniques, history and much more. In 1999, he was awarded the prestigious title of Sokeshodai. In 2012, he was presented two of the most prestigious honors in martial arts - Meijin Wajutsu, and the rank of Junidan.

Black Belt Magazine, November, 1999 Buzzline writes:

"W. Dan Hausel, Professor of Martial Arts at the University of Wyoming, was appointed Soke Shodai (grandmaster)/kudan (9th degree black belt) of Seiyo Shorin-Ryu Karate/Kobudo by the Zen Kokusai Soke Budo/Bugei Renmei commission at the Juko Kai International headquarters in North Carolina on September 26th, 1999. Soke Hausel was also recently honored in 1998 by induction into two hall of fames, honored as instructor of the year by two international associations, and highlighted in several Marquis, American Biographical Institute, and International Biographical Center Who's Who documents for accomplishments in martial arts, geological sciences, public speaking, writing and art."

Hausel has trained in martial arts for more than 5 decades and holds many certifications in traditional martial arts. He is the world head & grandmaster of Seiyo No Shorin-Ryu Karate-Kobudo Kai and holds the highest rank attainable in Shorin-Ryu (Okinawan) karate. His achievements have led to induction into several Halls of Fame.  A former instructor at four different universities, Hausel has introduced a few thousand students to the ways of martial arts and continues to train adults at the Arizona Hombu Dojo.
